Female Authors
Books are powerful things. They can teach us. They can make us laugh, make us cry and make us want more. Books open up our imaginations and take us to new unexplored worlds. We meet new people, we can uncover mysteries, we can solve crimes, they can save us from loneliness, help calm our anxieties and rescue us from boredom. Books can sometimes be very difficult to put down.
A book series that captured my imagination and drew my hands to its pages constantly was a book about a particular wizard with a lightening scar and his clever friend with frizzy hair. Do you know it? Of course you do, I wasn’t the only one who liked following the adventures of Harry Potter. 500 million books were sold worldwide and it became the best-selling series in history. Who wrote it? J. K. Rowling. She became the world’s first billionaire author! She’s received an OBE from the Queen. But she’s not the only women to find fame from her books. Have you heard of the Gruffalo? Julia Donaldson introduced us to a lyrical world of characters. She’s known for Room on the broom, The Highway Rat and The Smartest Giant in Town. There are so many writers who have written about extraordinary creatures. Cressidor Cowell is another favourite. Perhaps if I give you a clue about how to train your dragon you might know her. Judith Kerr also deserves a place in a list of popular female authors. She wrote some lovely stories about a cat called Mog but she’s best known for The Tiger Who Came For Tea.
I love stories, I love reading them, writing them and telling them. I love all sorts of stories, the frightening ones like Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein. I like the stories that take me on adventures, like Edith Blyton’s Famous Five Series. I like the books that take me on quests across the world or into other enchanting worlds. I like to read about brave characters, saving lives and maybe even saving the world. A character that grows Like Jacklin Wilson’s main girl Tracey Beaker. I like comedy. I like mystery . I like a hint of Jane Austin romance.
But how do you write a story like that? I’ve never thought about the person with the pen. Who are they? Why are they writing this story? Where do the idea’s come from?
So I’m going to find out. Let’s jump in the pages of a book and find out how the words got there and why they are important? I will be writing about some of my favourite female writers in the next few blogs.
